MICHAEL BROYDE: Halakhah permits one to have a private Thanksgiving celebration with one's Jewish or secular friends and family. For reasons related to citizenship and the gratitude we feel towards the United States government, I would even suggest that such conduct is wise and proper.
Christopher Caldwell: in some ways our public order is coming to resemble that of pagan Rome, where religion and morality were separated. Religion was a matter for the household. Morality was determined and imposed by society's elites, with grim results for freedom of thought.
Thomas Reese: After centuries of neglect, Catholics are being encouraged to read the Scriptures, something Protestants still do at greater rates than Catholics. Catholicism today has some of the best Scripture scholarship in the world, but sadly little of that gets down to the parish level. Seminaries still do a poor job of training priests to preach on the Scriptures. Bible study is not a big part of parish life as it is in evangelical churches.
